If you’re looking for strategies to achieve more of your goals and feel more energetic, detoxification might not be the first thought that comes to your mind. However, building healthy detox habits can have an immensely positive impact on your overall health and productivity.

The good news is that our bodies already have natural detox systems built in,  so the key is to create habits that support these systems.

Let’s start with the basics of human anatomy…

Your liver and lymphatic system work together to detox your body. Your liver processes the blood leaving your stomach and intestines which helps metabolize anything toxic into nontoxic substances before it’s circulated through your body. Your lymphatic system is comprised of a series of organs, tissues, and vessels that help regulate your bloodstream and anything that finds its way into it, such as toxins.

When you create habits that optimize the work your liver and lymphatic system do, you’ll likely find yourself feeling more energized and able to achieve more throughout your day. Here are six simple detox habits to implement into your daily routine.

6 Simple Ways to Detox to Feel More Energized

As with any type of healthy habit, it takes some time to establish detoxing routines. Start by implementing one or two detox habits into your life, instead of overwhelming yourself by trying all these tips at once.

1. Pump the Brakes on Alcohol

Your liver metabolizes more than 90% of the alcohol you consume. When you’re drinking in excess, your liver may struggle to filter toxins from your body.

Therefore, limiting the number of alcoholic drinks you have each week is one of the easiest and most effective ways to support your liver’s ability to detox. Here are some ways to do that:

  • Reduce the number of alcoholic drinks you consume: One drink per day for women and two drinks per day for men is considered moderate alcohol consumption, so aim for this amount or lower.
  • Opt for a mocktail: Mocktails have been rising in popularity, with sobriety or a low-alcohol lifestyles becoming more mainstream. This means you have plenty of mocktail options to try!
  • Try another type of beverage instead: Sparkling water, cider, nootropic beverages, or kombucha can still feel like a treat without the harmful side effects. You can also sip them from a wine glass or flute to enhance your experience.

2. Move Your Body

We’ve long known that getting in a full-body workout a few times a week provides you with many health benefits. You can add detoxification to that list.

When you exercise, the enhanced blood flow and muscle activity help your lymphatic system perform more efficiently. Additionally, getting your heart rate up frequently helps you detox as you sweat out toxins through your skin.

However, it can be challenging to “fit” exercise into your schedule when you’re busy. To help yourself stay on track, use these tips to move more:

  • Take your meetings and phone calls while walking.
  • Get a standing or treadmill desk.
  • If you’re at a leadership level at work, consider implementing a corporate wellness program.
  • Take plenty of walks and stretch breaks while at work.
  • Exercise first thing when you wake up.

3. Say “No” to Processed Foods

If you’re looking to add more energy to your life, reducing processed foods and committing to clean eating will be highly impactful for boosting energy levels and detoxifying.

Your diet plays a large part in the amount of toxins your body must deal with. Highly processed foods such as potato chips or hot dogs, contain a lot of sugar, sodium, and saturated fats, which are harder for your body to process.

On the other hand, a diet rich in whole foods will give your body plenty of nutrients and energy while reducing the toxins it has to process. If you’re looking for support in this area, a health coach can assist you in building new eating habits.

4. Take a Hot/Cold Shower

To give your system a lymphatic boost, try a hot-and-cold shower for a full body detoxification.

Start by stepping into a hot shower, which expands your blood vessels and opens up your lymphatic system. The extra nutrients, oxygen, and white blood cells get circulated to the areas in your body that need them the most.

After five minutes, switch to cold water to encourage your lymphatic vessels to flush any toxins from the area. The cold water shrinks your blood vessels, causing the further removal of toxins.

Although it can be a shock to the system, this hot-and-cold shower technique can be a great tool for detoxification and rejuvenation.

5. Sip on Lemon H2O

Although it may be the simplest item on this list, it may be the most impactful: staying hydrated!

Drinking plenty of water is crucial for your health for many reasons, and detoxifying your body is one of the most vital. Water is necessary for removing waste products from the body. It’s quite literally the vessel for detoxification.

As a good rule of thumb, start your day with a glass of warm lemon water. You become slightly dehydrated when you sleep, so it’s especially important to replenish that water for energy and detoxification. You should also aim to drink half your body weight in ounces of water each day.

Adding lemon to your water is a tasty way to get even more detoxification benefits because these citrus fruits have been shown to help lower blood pressure and provide a healthy boost of vitamin C.

Being conscious about the type of water you drink will also impact your detoxing habits, so be sure to look into the type of water that’s best for you.

Here are some additional tips to help stay hydrated:

  • Keep a water bottle on your desk at all times.
  • Eat water-rich fruits and veggies, such as watermelon, berries, celery, and cucumber.
  • Use a water bottle with time markers to ensure you drink enough.

6. Book a Lymphatic Massage

Spa treatments for detoxification are growing increasingly popular, so if you’re looking for a way to detox while feeling pampered, consider a lymphatic massage.

A lymphatic drainage massage combats inflammation by strategically flushing out excess liquids and toxins from the body. This massage can reduce water retention and help you feel more energized.

Feel like you’ll forget to make appointments with your already full to-do list? Automate this task by scheduling multiple massages in advance. This way, you’ll never struggle to find an appointment or forget your detox habits no matter how busy you are.

The Bottom Line

Implementing these detoxification habits into your life can help you feel more energized, which will allow you to perform better and achieve more in every area of life. Remember to start slow when building habits, and establish an accountability system so that you’ll stay on track with your goals.
