When kids are asked what they want to be when they grow up, they often respond with what’s most interesting and fun for them. A dancer, an astronaut, an artist, etc. Eventually, many kids are conditioned to choose something more practical. Their interests are second to the practicality of their career choice.

If you were like this as a kid, maybe you’re now wondering if there’s more to your life as an adult. With all the advancements in technology and culture, is it possible to have a career you are truly passionate about these days?

We say yes! Although you might not be able to change your career overnight, you can learn to mold your passions and strengths into fulfilling and inspiring work.

With a little work and creativity, you can design a career around something you’re passionate about and love the work you do every single day.

How Passion Can Inform Your Career Choice

Passion is a great tool to help you figure out the career you want to do long-term. Doing something you’re passionate about can help you live a longer, more fulfilling life.

People who are passionate about their work will have an edge in their field. Passionate people are the ones who keep working towards their goals when everyone else wants to quit. They’re the professionals whose brains work overtime to solve the problems that will help them succeed.

You don’t necessarily need passion to be successful in your chosen career, but it certainly does help! People who are passionate about their work, after all, rarely feel like they are working.

So, if you identify one of your passions, ask yourself how you can begin incorporating it into your career.

This passionate career choice doesn’t need to be permanent either. You can change your career at any time if it doesn’t work out.

In today’s world, people aren’t expected to stay in the same career, let alone the same job, for their whole life. It’s normal to switch careers for a variety of reasons, sometimes up to seven times in the course of your life.

So, why not try something you’re passionate about for a change?

What Do You Love to Do?

Unfortunately, many people don’t know what exactly it is they love to do.

Sometimes conditioning has made them consider practical career options, or they’ve simply never fostered the creativity it takes to dream big. But it can certainly be painful to not know what you love to do.

If you find yourself out of touch with your passions, remember to begin pursuing them one step at a time. Start paying attention to the things that excite you. Understand what you love to learn about and talk about. The things that excite you will provide you with the clues you need to unlock your passion.

Keep building on these clues, but don’t feel pressured to make them into a career as quickly as you can. Simply take this time to learn what you love and spend more time doing those things.

What Are Your Strengths?

If you’re still on the journey to determining what you’re passionate about, start by looking at your strengths.

Ask yourself: What am I good at? When and how do people compliment me? What can I do that I feel excited to share with other people? Questions like these can help you understand your natural strengths.

There are plenty of quizzes and exercises that can help you find your strengths, and doing something you’re good at can energize and fulfill you. It will likely be very helpful to others too.

You can also develop your strengths over time so, if your strengths don’t align with your passions, that’s ok; you can develop and improve your strengths.

If you find that you have an abundance of strengths that you could put to use in a career, then you may need to decide which of your strengths most fulfills you.

Finding a Middle Ground

To begin creating a career you’re passionate about, you need to next find a middle ground between what you love and what you’re good at.

It’s ok if it takes a few tries to find something that’s a perfect blend of passion and profitability. After all, you may love walking your dog, but a long-term career as a dog walker may not be suitable for you and your goals.

Other people may praise your strengths as a salesperson, but if you simply hate doing sales, it’s not a good career option for you.

If you’ve practiced identifying your strengths and developing things you love into skills, you’ll likely have many good fits for a career. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking there’s only one career that will make you happy for the rest of your life. Just focus on what you love doing right now and take action to turn it into a job you love.

Many people turn to entrepreneurship to monetize their passion. Entrepreneurship is not for everyone, and certainly takes a lot of work, but if you’re determined to find the perfect middle ground of passion and profitability, you may find the most success by inventing your own career.

The Bottom Line

With a little work and creativity, you can design a career around something you’re passionate about and love the work you do every single day.

Most people dream about going to work every day and doing what they love, but believe their dreams are impossible to achieve. However, you may find that creating a career out of something you’re passionate about is the most fulfilling thing you do in your life.

You then get to reap the benefits of more energy, freedom, and inspiration in your life.
